Camping Petiquette

Camping With A Pet?
We love pets, and know our campers love their pets too! They become such a part of our lives, and they deserve to vacation as part of the family too. When it comes to camping with pets...a little common pet sense goes a long way. For a pleasant getaway with your pet and to make sure you’re welcomed back, here are some common “petiquette” tips to keep in mind:

10.) It is important to follow the pet rules or guidelines where you are staying. Rules or guidelines may very from one place to another. Click here to see Wilderness Campground's pet rules.

9.) All dogs bark from time to time, and yes its easy to just get used to it when they're our own pet. But, others do not appreciate constant barking; especially, when on vacation. Please be sure to keep Fido's barks to a minimum.

8.) Don't automatically assume all dogs get along. Before walking up to another pet with your own make sure its okay with the other pet owner. This also applies while using the dog park. Before taking off your dog's leash in the dog park, be sure to ask the other pet owner(s) how they feel their dogs may react. Also, if your dog isn't as friendly as others, it may be wise to let the other dog owner know while in the dog park or wait your turn to enter.

7.) Clean up messes! No one likes to step in piles! This is an absolute must. Even if it is on your site, it should be picked up in a timely fashion. It definitely should be picked up before you leave. Make sure to always have a bag with you while walking. You never know when "that" time is coming up. If your dog digs holes on your site, be sure to bury them an clean them up before they leave.

6.) If you're dog likes to tug and pull while on a leash walking, it is probably not the best idea to let children walk Fido around the campground without adult supervision. Make sure everyone (adults and children alike) in your camping party know and follows pet rules. It makes for a more pleasant camping trip for all parties.

5.)  Not everyone camping likes pets. Do not allow your dog to sniff, lick or jump on others without their consent.

4.) Keep Fido on a leash at all times. At Wilderness Campground in Montello we do have a dog park where Fido can be free from a leash for a little while. (But, don't hog it all day, other dogs may want a chance in the park too.) Make sure the leash is well secured, and cannot be easily broken.

3.) Don't leave Fido alone and unattended at your site. Remember, they are in a different place as well, and they may not act the same here as they do at home. A lot of pets get anxiety when they cannot see their owner(s).

2.) Be sure to have along with you; your dogs rabies tags and a copy of the certificates. This is best practice as you never know when a situation may take place.

1.) BE SURE TO GIVE YOUR PET A LOT OF LOVE AND CONSIDERATION WHEN CAMPING. It may be new territory for them as well. Give them lots of treats, and don't ignore them. Take them for walks, and try to include them in as many family activities as possible.
